In harmony with nature - Leave no trace
We've all set up a tent at some point, either with a youth group or on a family outing. When the weather is on your side, and there's no excessive rain, it's not too cold, no strong winds or extreme heat, and no wild animals invading the campsite, it all seems to go smoothly. However, we've all likely experienced that things can take a turn for the worse quickly. The lighter is broken, a tent loop snaps, the sun is too intense, we went hiking and lost track of our location... These are all issues that can be quite challenging when luck is not on your side.
We don't intend to turn you into Bear Grylls, but a few handy tips can certainly make life more enjoyable!
We've all struggled with starting a fire at some point. Often it's because of wet conditions, strong winds, not enough matches, or the wood smokes more than it flames.
With a few simple yet very useful tips, we can make this task much easier! Learn them with us at The Gathering and impress next time you see someone struggling to start a fire! :-)
You're packing for a camp, hike, vacation, and you probably hear that voice of your mother in your head asking if you've packed x and y because it might rain, the boat could sink, or there might have been a hurricane once. ;-)
But what do you actually need when you're going on a camp or starting a hike?
We're happy to explain all the elements to you, why you should have them, and when they can be (extremely) useful.
Every participant at The Gathering receives a free firestone. In case of a real emergency, this could be your lifesaver! :-)
It must have been one of the best inventions, after the crossbow, the cell phone, the paperclip, and the cable tie! ;-)
It's something that anyone can make with minimal materials, and it's fun to practice too! :-)
Most people learn how to tie shoelaces very quickly, but there are dozens of other knots that can be super useful in everyday life. We'll teach you some of them here along with their applications. And with a bit of creativity, you'll even build a half castle soon! :-)
Parents might get a bit nervous when they read these two words in combination with their beloved children. But no worries, we're not going to throw axes or knives, nor are we going to cut down trees. Instead, we'll explain how to use them properly, how to transport and handle them safely, and what you should definitely not do (throwing is one of them! ;-)).
Especially for our friends in youth organizations, we'd like to discuss some camp management. How and where to set up tents, kitchen, restroom facilities, and more. Here, we can also practice setting up tents without risking our lives! :-)
